1. WHAT GEAR DO I NEED FOR HIKING?
For day hikes you don’t need much equipment, just some comfortable hiking shoes or boots and a small backpack to carry water, layers, sun protection sunglasses and a hat.
2. WHAT KIND OF SHOES SHOULD I WEAR HIKING?
Considering how much weight you plan on carrying and that the trail conditions are rocky terrain you should wear hiking shoes.For day hikes, hiking shoes or trail running shoes are best. For multi day hikes, mid cut boots and full boots are the best option. These will help support your ankles. For multi day expedition treks with tough trails and bad weather, those heavy duty, waterproof boots are the right choice.
3. WHAT CLOTHES ARE GOOD FOR HIKING?
This also is dependent on the weather and the local conditions. For hiking, it’s best to dress in layers, that way you’re never too hot or too cold.You’ll need a thermal layer on the core, an insulating layer like a fleece for the summit and a waterproof outer layer to protect you from possible rain and wind. It will be ideal to have with you a couple of performance synthetic clothing which also dries quickly.
4. EVERY TIME I’VE TRIED HIKING I END UP GETTING BLISTERS, HOW DO I PREVENT THEM?
That will be a problem if you have new shoes.So, make sure to break them in and you could do this by going on a shorter trail before taking on a big one.Another little trick you can use for bigger hikes is to rub a light layer of vaseline on your feet before you put your socks on in the morning or sprinkle some powder. This helps prevent your socks from rubbing and creating a blister.
5. SHOULD I USE HIKING POLES?
Hiking poles aren’t just for older people, they help you carry a heavy load and keep your balance while trekking. They’re also knee savers for steep up hills and downhills especially for the hard trails and mountains of Crete.
6. WHAT SIZE BACKPACK DO I NEED?
The size of your backpack will depend on how many days you plan on hiking. Pack capacity is measured in volume (liters). For 1 day hike = 35-50 liters would be ideal
7. DO I NEED SPECIAL HIKING SOCKS?
The simple answer is no, you don’t need hiking socks but, they will make your experience a lot more enjoyable. They provide cushioning and help keep your feet dry (which helps prevent blisters).
8. WHAT SHOULD I PACK IN MY FIRST AID KIT?
Don’ t worry about it; the first aid kit, considering the length of your trip, the size of your group, and the lack of medical knowledge will be arranged from our leader.
9. HOW DO I STAY DRY WHILE HIKING?
To stay dry while hiking be sure to carry a good quality, fully waterproof rain jacket and rain pants. Fully waterproof clothes have a breathable liner and seam sealed zips. If they don’t have these two features, it’s just water resistant.It’s also important to keep your backpack dry, you can do that by using a pack cover-which fits around you backpack- or to use a pack liner, which is a bag that you first put in your backpack then pack everything inside that bag.
10.WHAT ARE SOME TASTY ACTIVITY SNACKS?
Chocolate, fruits, energy bars, cookies,nuts (almonds and peanuts), dried fruit, crackers.
11. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TREAT WATER?
If you’re going to hike or get active for at least one day in Crete, you should have with you at least 3-4 liters of water(because of the hot weather).It might be an option to drink from a spring or stream but only if our leader tells you it’s safe to drink.
12. WHAT DRINKS ARE GOOD FOR HIKING OR ANY OTHER DEMANDING ACTIVITY?
Drinking enough water a day before the hiking day is recommended but carrying extra drinks like juices aren’t always practical. The best option is to go for some energy drinks.Bringing electrolytes tabs are also a good idea for the case you get sick. Even if you can’t hold any food down, at least the drink will give you some calories, minerals and strength to hopefully get you through.
13. I’M OUT OF SHAPE & NOT FIT ENOUGH TO HIKE FOR LONG HOURS, WHERE SHOULD I START?
Start small, you don’t want to just jump right to the toughest trail and end up hitting the wall.The idea is to have fun and reunite with nature.The best way to get in shape for an outdoor activity is to get out on the trails or start walking in a quick pace.So, don’t be afraid but do not overrate also your fitness status in when you are considering to participate in an outdoor activity.
14. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO STAY SAFE WHILE DOING THE ACTIVITY?
Compared to other adventure sports outdoor activities are some of the most safest activities, but there are still some risks involved. The best ways to avoid these risks is :to be advised and follow carefully the directions and instructions of your leader.
15. IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS AM I INSURED?
Well, the outdoor activities can’t be insured. You have the fully responsibility for yourself and if you want to be insured you should find a travel insurance agency suitable for outdoor activities.However,our members are trained to give you instructions for a safe adventure and keeps you out of trouble.
16. IF SOMEONE GETS INJURED?
We will give you first aid until the rescue team arrives
17. WHAT IF I CANNOT KEEP UP WITH THE ACTIVITY?
Depending on the activity you could stay with the leader e.g in the car, or one of our guides will stay with you or even leads you back to the closest place where our driver will pick you up.
18. WHO ARE THE LEADERS?
Experienced local hikers with a huge knowledge of the natural Cretan environment, the microclimate of the area and the possible alternative paths.
19. WHAT IF I BOOK AN ACTIVITY AND THE WEATHER IS UNSUITABLE?
The activity is either cancelled and we return your money back or arranged for another day if that is possible.
20. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T SHOW UP THE DAY OF THE ACTIVITY OR DECLARE WEAKNESS TO PARTICIPATE?
We won’t return the money you have paid in such a case.
21. IF THERE IS A SUDDEN CHANGE IN AT THE WEATHER DURING THE ACTIVITY WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
You should follow the instructions of the leader
